AI Search for Small Business: How to Get Your Firm Mentioned in ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot

More people ask AI assistants who to hire. See how AI search differs from Google, what shapes whether your firm is named, and four practical steps.

Customers used to type a search into Google and scan ten links. Increasingly they ask an assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Perplexity a plain question and read a single written answer. If your firm is not part of that answer, you can be invisible to a customer who never reached a results page.

This is often called AI SEO, or generative engine optimisation. It is not magic and nobody outside the AI companies controls it, but there are sensible, low-cost things a small business can do. This guide explains how it works and where to start.

A traditional search engine ranks pages and shows you a list. An AI assistant reads sources, composes an answer and sometimes cites the pages it used. That changes three things.

  • You are competing to be named, not just listed. An answer to "who provides managed IT support for small businesses in Brisbane?" might mention three firms, or none.
  • The answer is built from many sources. Your own website, directory listings, reviews, news and other people's pages can all contribute, and not all of them are in your control.
  • Accuracy is not guaranteed. Assistants can be wrong about what a business does, where it is or who runs it. Wrong claims about you are a reason to pay attention, not just to feel flattered by a mention.

None of the AI companies publish a ranking you can climb, and they change how they work often. Be wary of anyone who promises a guaranteed position.

What tends to help

The details differ between assistants, but the same fundamentals keep coming up.

1. Make sure the assistants can actually read your site

Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. If your pages only fill in after a script loads, a crawler may see an empty shell. We cover this in detail in Is your website readable by AI crawlers?

2. State plain facts clearly and consistently

Say who you are, what you do, where you work and who you serve, in ordinary sentences, on your own site. Then check that your business name, address, hours and description match across your Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Contradictions are how wrong answers happen.

3. Answer the questions people actually ask

Assistants look for passages that answer a question directly. Pages with clear headings and short, self-contained answers are easier to quote. See how to write FAQs that AI assistants can quote.

4. Earn mentions elsewhere

Assistants lean on sources that look credible. Accurate directory listings, genuine reviews from real clients, industry association pages and local coverage all help. Never fabricate reviews or testimonials: it is dishonest, it breaks platform rules, and it can do real damage if it is discovered.

What to be careful about

  • Do not publish claims you cannot back up. If an assistant repeats an invented certification, client or price from your site, you own that mistake.
  • Do not paste client information into AI tools to write content. Our guide to using AI safely explains why.
  • Treat quick-win tricks with suspicion. Hidden text, mass-produced pages and keyword stuffing are the sort of thing search and AI systems learn to ignore or penalise.

How to know if it is working

You cannot see a ranking, so you have to sample. Ask the questions your customers ask, in a few assistants, and record whether you are named, whether your site is cited and whether what is said is correct. We lay out a repeatable routine in how to measure your AI search visibility.

A realistic starting point

1. Check your website can be read without JavaScript and that you are not blocking the crawlers you want.

2. Fix inconsistent business details across the web.

3. Add clear, honest FAQ answers to your main service pages.

4. Run a monthly check of the questions your customers ask.

For a professional practice such as a law firm, medical clinic or accounting firm, privacy and accuracy matter more than volume.
